Is authority really necessary in blogging and does it count anyway? The facts are that authority counts a whole lot and here's why

What is authority anyway?

In blogging, it is generally the most qualified person that provides information in a post or webpage. When I say qualified it must also relate to the subject matter.

A lawyer on legal matters

A Doctor on medical issues

Sports physiologist on exercise

Botanist on gardening

The list goes endlessly on.
Google believes that the information provided should be of the highest standard and the most qualified win the day

This is not an unreasonable attitude when you are searching for answers because you want results that you can rely on. Going to the top of the tree gives this some authenticity and information you should be able to rely on.

Can you circumvent authority?

One way is to do your research and include authority quotes in your article.

Go as high as you can to get the best opinions available.
Say you do thirty pushups a day to lose 5kg of tummy fat. So what we all say however you quote research done by the esteemed World Health Organisation that did a trial with 500 men and women to prove your theory was correct.

You are piggy-backing on others to support your great work.

Authority linking is indeed done in many articles. I follow and use Neil Patel a lot because he writes some great material. Neil is at the top of his game and known across the world as an authority. He is the owner of Ubersuggest (a Keyword tool) and a marketing agency for big-ticket companies. You would think that would be enough but Neil regularly uses reports and statistics done by others to back up his arguments.

If Aunty Edna did a review on Air fryers She may well battle against Gordan Ramsay for a first-page listing even if she was very well known. Naturally, the voting would be heavily in favor of the loud Gordon Ramsy and pore Aunt Edna would miss out.

However, if Aunt Edna took old Gordon head-on with a clever Keyword selection like

“The new brand deep-fryer and why I believe Gordon Ramsay is wrong.”

Using intrigue and authority to gather readers would most likely win the argument for most people.

Enhancing authority with fact

A recent launch of a training program by Mark Ling. a New Zealand guy well known in the industry filled his page with client testimonials.

This 80-year-old Grandmother used this method to make $500 a day.

A teenager named Joel surprised us all by topping the class and earning $20,000 in a month.

We can always debate the truth or otherwise of testimonials however they do carry a lot of weight.
They are used regularly in Sales Funnels as real support for the product being pushed.

We have established that Authority is required to get your blog moving up in the pages. However we can not all be experts in everything we do. Therefore borrowing authority from others will lend credence to our writing.
Remember that Google wants the best answer possible so give it to them and back it up with facts to support your work

Page ranking is done by Google (and Bing-Yahoo) based on many elements involved.
Authority is just one of them albeit an important one.

It also depends on the subject. Something very general in nature does not have experts in the field and you will gain your ranking by other means.

While Keyword use is still vitally important Google now focuses more on search intent a rather nebulous Robot infested look at blogging. What this means is that the best answer wins. However, if readers don't like the best answer and bail early you will then get bounced back down the page numbers.

Therefore the real answer lies in great content that answers a question and backs it up with facts and figures.

No one ever said blogging was easy.

Writing without authority

First of all, Bing still uses exact match keywords so you have a good start. Then your Meta description must grab searches quickly and your content must keep them on the page.

Time on page is a critical issue and one that must be strived for, Google analytics will give you the results and you then get a chance to make any necessary changes.

When readers are bailing out early Google will penalise you and remove you from the good pages.

Therefore good material and correct SEO may well favor you over authority.

Conclusion

It is hard keeping all the balls in the air needing to perform well in SEO.

Authority is but one of the puzzel pieces however a very important one. It should be used as often as possible in any way you can. Staying in front of the pack is necessary.
