Impact of the internet

Here Peter Hanley looks at Impact of the internet and particularly on business and how it assists your daily operation, sales and income.

How to start an at home business

What has the internet done for you?

I am an old guy born well before the Internet was thought of so I probably appreciate the advances made in recent years.

Mr Internet is a great thing in so many ways that it is like counting stars however we will try and head that way.

The internet, the World Wide Web, email, web pages, Google YouTube, social media were not around for your use until about 1989 and then very slow to start. In fact, Facebook was not until 2004 less than 15 years past.

Let's not get hung up on starting dates lets look at things of interest.

Emails started commercially in about 1997 in The USA and slowly spread to the world and what would life be like without emails. A business would stand still and we would all go back to the postal days.

Will the WWW become overloaded and collapse?

The answer is presumably no as technology advances and we have an increase in usage.

We now have 5 billion devices, from computers to cars to kitchen ovens, which access the Internet remotely.

Rob Wainwright

What we don't yet understand is the extent of criminal activity on the Internet and what this can do.

Digital Terrorists and organised crime may also have an effect.
Back in 2007 nearly half of the root servers were taken down and some serious but they were recovered quite quickly.
The big fear now is they will hit important targets like central hubs and name depositories.

Disruption by organised crime

This is an issue for all as Identity theft and fraud across the broad spectrum is of a growing nature even the government is vulnerable in many areas.
We have heard how Facebook has been hacked and the Russians tried to control the USA elections, (Maybe) and identity theft is rife.

Then there is old man weather with cyclones, floods and fire that could cause local problems.

A meltdown would be a calamity beyond belief as we rely so heavily on everyday items.

The effect of internet shut down would melt down activity

Our cars are driven by technology, our houses and telephones, all accounting systems, the Stock Exchange the list is long and the worry high.
I look at what a cyber expert had to say,

And if I were to ask you what is your greatest personal fear?

I am very worried about this great misplaced confidence in the unbreakable nature of the Internet. It is not unbreakable: it can collapse, it may indeed collapse. There is a parallel with the financial crisis. Very few people predicted the Armageddon scenario or paid much attention to it, and yet here we are deep in recession in many parts of the world. I don’t want to be a doomsday merchant, but I think the collapse of the Internet would have a very, very significant impact. This is what we referred to in Davos as the ‘dark side’ of the Internet, the dark side of connectivity

What do we need to do about the future of the Internet

My take is that the technology advances will keep us ahead of the criminals and be able to maintain growth inactivity for the years to come.

Money security and control has always been a stumbling block but the release of cyber currency with Blockchain technology may contribute to shoring up of confidence.

We have experienced WiFi and Blue Tooth, cellular data, even Netflix as an internet product all working in our lives.

Hubs and storage are scattered worldwide and provide a plan of backup and support so that and activity can be overcome in a short time. I see it as difficult to have an impact over such a vast array of infrastructure.

The internet will drive further benefits everyday

For the users, we just want to be able to play everyday with expanding technology in Finance, health, information, shopping and personal tools.

I was talking recently with a friend about the Internet banking system. His idea was that this was inherently unsafe and could not be used in any form.
I asked about a traditional form of a basic email service and his thoughts about that. It was OK because it had been around for awhile and was different.

Perception sometimes takes time.

Increasing speeds and Internet access

Wow, have we come a long way with this. This is one area with massive advances in technology away from the average copper wire.

Ethernet uses copper cables to deliver data, and it has a reputation of being a lot slower than fiber optic cables. … Now, however, “fast Ethernet” offers speeds of up to 100Mbps, while Gigabit Ethernet can deliver speeds of a hefty 1000Mbps. Currently, Cat 6 Ethernet cables can carry up to a massive 10Gbps

And then we have wireless technology with 4G and 5G networks delivering voice and data taking over from normal broadband plans. In Australia, for instance, the fastest NBN connection is 100 Mbps whilst a 5G network maybe 30 times faster than that.

Download a Movie in seconds or minutes not hours.

So technology mixes will make breaking the whole harder as time goes forward. However, Cybercrime will increase with highly sophisticated criminal elements looking for a mug like us.

The password control is your duty

Use commercial passwords and change them regularly, do not have one Password for everything you do as one hack could be destructive
