How to Create a Logo Design

How to create a Logo Design that stays the distance and becomes instantly recognizable. It is all about brand building

Creating a logo the initial steps to take

Color is the first step.

Your logo will be displayed on every bit of public material you use so getting it wrong can be very costly.
Apple got it wrong. They started with rainbow colors and ended in black and white.

Apple logo old
Apple Logo new

The color was to celebrate the launch of a colored computer way back in 1977 and lasted a couple of decades. The change would not have been cheap as all the collateral was thrown out and replaced, The black can be silver but it remains identifiable.

Every color you add to the logo increases the printing cost so think this through.

These are easily recognizable and have stood the test of time however simple in design. None of them represent a product yet we can easily name what they sell because of repetition

Size is a factor that takes up page area

You certainly need to get a meaning across in the logo but when it is placed on a business card does it dominate the landscape and leave little space for important information?

This is one I picked at random that is big in land area, has 7 colors, and means very little to all but a few users.

Choosing a Font

The more common the font the easier your life will be. Most common fonts are proven easy to read for all people whatever the size is chosen. Elaborate fonts are not always available and minor changes to your material will look wrong when printers try and match material

Save time and money by outsourcing

Now that you have the basics of what you want why not pay a few dollars to an expert to draft up some ideas for you?
I have found this will save you countless hours that have more value used elsewhere than trying to create the perfect logo.

Having done this myself I understand the benefits of getting an expert to do the design. For sure, I may make changes and suggestions to better suit my purpose but they do the work. I used Fiverr for this event because it is economical and you can get international value at local costs.

Taking a hard path

We all fall for this at some time and recently we wanted a simple logo for a small project we were considering.

I went to a free Logo maker page and spend an hour or more picking out suitable designs. We eventually came up with a concept and it looked ok.

The free logo was good but to use it I needed to buy the rights and a quick us$75 would fix that problem. But, I thought it was free and it is if you don't use it commercially. I was not all that happy with my production so I walked away from the idea and saved my money.

Of course, the companies are there to make money and I respect that. They supply templates and ideas so they deserve to be paid but I am getting a substandard product for a standard price.

Do you need a logo and a USP?

First of all, what does a USP do? This is your unique selling proposition that explains what you do as a business

Nike; Just do it

Starbucks “Love your beverage or let us know. We'll always make it right”.

Amazon  Provides access to huge choice selection, at low prices, with fast delivery.

Samsung; “Samsung is leading electronics company especially mobile phones and TVs”

In many cases, your logo will do it for you however that is when you are known and understood. When you are new in marketing you need all the help you can get and a Good USP is a necessary inclusion.

You know your business better than anyone else so cut it down to a few core words and tell the world.. Sometimes it helps to brainstorm this with a group so you don't project your myopic point of view.

Conclusion

Picking the perfect logo is a job where the results will live your life in business. Some years down the track you will want to look at your artwork and be able to say, “we did that well and it has done its job”
Therefore make your decision based on the best available information you can get, you won't be sorry.
