Just because you are a good mechanic or a great hairdresser, maybe you have a fabulous range of clothes, jewellery or even a service guy/ gal that's good enough to get you by.

How to specialise in a market

Let's first look at what you do that is special. You might be a family mechanic, a cheap mechanic, a VW specialist, a dyno tune guy or even part of a franchise, but you must do something that has your signature written all over it.

It may well be location, a convenience thing, hence something that makes you stand out from the crowd. It might be a specialty or technology or even a car brand.

Branding is straightforward if you have a USP (unique selling proposition).

Using Facebook for business.

Become a virtual assistant

The easy parts to start are a Facebook page and Linkedin page, and there are lots of instructions to do this.

The hard part is regularly posting to obtain a following and some likes and shares, but one share can create a business for you.

 It is not everyday, but when you have a look at business leaders, they are all there plugging away.

An excellent example of this was the recent US elections where now President Trump used Facebook and twitter to capture the market at a winning margin and at under half the cost of mainstream marketing. President Trump, a businessman, used solid business principles to gather his followers. The difference was that he used today's media and not what worked in the past.

He also used newsletters, emails, SMS broadcasts, and messaging as low-cost avenues to gather subscribers. Interestingly, his cost per action (voter) was just over $5.00.

If you could get a new buyer at five bucks worth of marketing, you could be a winner too.

I know of one business that sent out 130 SMS messages which cost just $26.00 and achieved new bookings for around 30 clients. What's more, the dollar return was near to $9000.

Another client sends out newsletters at $60 a month and has achieved nearly double the monthly sales.

My local fish shop sends a regular email with specials. 

The latest message was for fish tacos and chips. 

I am a consistent Friday night takeaway person and swap between Italian, Indian, Thai and occasional fish. 

In this case, I received the mail at 4 pm and lined up with the others by 6.30. I had no intention of doing this until prompted by a single email.
